Before that, there was a mask, and some earplugs, and a rain app. This is what each one was actually built to do, and where it runs out.

The gap between what they were made for and what you need from them isn't a flaw in you, or in them.
So let's go through the drawer one at a time.

A seated passenger, upright, head against a rest, in a cabin that's already dimmed, for four hours, mostly not moving. For that passenger, a flat piece of padded fabric with an elastic strap is a good answer. It's cheap, it packs flat, and it does the job.
Now change every one of those conditions.
You're lying down, not sitting. You're there for eight hours, not four. The room isn't dimmed, it's the brightest it will be all day. And you turn over, probably several times, pressing one side of your face into a pillow.
The mask doesn't fail because it's badly made. It fails because a face pressed sideways into a pillow is a different shape than a face sitting upright, and the flat piece of fabric doesn't change shape with your face. That's why the nose is always where it opens up. It's the one place the design never had to seal, because on a plane your face never presses into anything.

The earplugs were built for a job site
Foam earplugs are protective equipment. That's not a figure of speech, it's the category: they exist to protect hearing over a long shift around machinery, and they're rated and tested for exactly that.
And they work. Measured in sleep labs, they win back a real share of the sleep that noise steals. That's more than most things in the drawer can claim.
But look at who that design assumes you are. Someone awake. Someone upright, or at least not lying on the side of their head. Someone who'll take them out at the end of a shift, rather than wearing them through eight hours of turning over.
Where they run out isn't loudness, it's the eight hours and the pillow. Foam that's seated properly at nine can be half out by eleven, and the ear it's protecting is the one you're lying on.
The rain app was built for falling asleep
A rain app assumes the hard part is the start. A dark, quiet room, a phone on the nightstand, and a mind that needs twenty minutes of somewhere else. For that person, rain from a phone speaker is enough, because once they're under, the room stays on their side.
Your room doesn't. The garbage truck shows up mid-morning, the doorbell after it, and rain from the nightstand has to be room-loud to stand between you and either. The app's other answer is earbuds, and earbuds are a thing you've already tried lying on.
And none of it touches the light, which is the half of the morning an app was never going to reach.
The honest part
Some of what makes daytime sleep hard isn't environmental at all. If your sleep has been badly disrupted for months, or you're falling asleep when you don't intend to, that's a conversation for a clinician, and nothing you can buy replaces it. This article is education, not medical advice.
But the drawer is environmental, all of it. Light and sound, in your room, at your hours. You can act on that layer today, and one more thing in the drawer proves you already have.
And then there's the foil
Nobody sells tin foil as a sleep product. There's no box, no claim, no trial period, no reviews. You worked it out yourself, on a morning when you'd run out of things to buy.
Here's the uncomfortable part. Of everything in that drawer, the foil is the one that does its job best. It has no edges to leak around, it doesn't shift when you turn over, and it doesn't care what it was designed for, because it wasn't designed at all.
So the foil isn't evidence that you gave up. It's evidence that you diagnosed the problem correctly, before anyone sold you anything, and then solved it with the only material in the house that would hold still.

What the foil can't do is come off the window. It fixes the room instead of you, it faces the street, and it costs you something every morning to look at it.
The one that starts from your problem
Everything in the drawer was designed for a different person and adapted to you. Start the design from you instead, and the shape of the thing changes.
If a face changes shape when it turns over, the mask has to change with it. So the cups are contoured, and the band is shaped to stay flush when you move rather than sliding out of position. If eyelids don't like eight hours of pressure, nothing should press on them. So nothing does, and you can blink normally inside it.
And if the ear you need to cover is the one you're lying on, the speaker can't be in a fixed spot. So it isn't. Thin speakers sit inside the band on slide-to-fit cords, and you move them to where your ears actually are, then move them again if you sleep differently tomorrow.
