Two things get into a dark room that most people never think about, and neither is stopped by the fix everyone recommends. Here's what's actually happening.
You did everything right. The curtains are closed. The earplugs are in. The room is as dark as you can make it. The house is as quiet as it gets at nine in the morning.
And you are still awake at 10:40, working out that if you fell asleep this second you would get six hours. You don't fall asleep this second.
Somewhere outside, someone starts mowing their lawn. Not close. Not loud, exactly. But you hear it in your chest more than your ears, and once you've heard it you can't stop hearing it.
So here's the part nobody explains.
Both of them get in for a reason
The light is not coming through your curtains. It's coming around them, and your eyes need far less of it than you would guess.
The sound isn't getting past your earplugs because the plugs are bad. It's getting past them because a mower and a voice are different shapes of sound, and foam is much better at one than the other.
Neither of those are a discipline problem. Both are physics, and that's better news than it sounds. Physics has a mechanism you can go after. Willpower does not.

- You sleep better away from home, in a hotel or a windowless room
- Someone else sleeps fine in the same room and you've wondered what is wrong with you
That last one matters more than it looks. Hold onto it.
What light does at the edges
Blackout curtains are sold on one number: how much light the fabric blocks. It's the wrong number, because the fabric is not where the light gets in.
A curtain is a rectangle hanging in front of a hole. It has a top, two sides and a bottom, and every one of them is a gap. At nine in the morning the light on the other side of that gap is outdoor light, which is not a little brighter than your bedside lamp. It's in a different class altogether.
So the fabric can be doing its job perfectly and the room can still have a bright line running down each edge.

Then there is the question of how much light is actually too much, and this is where most advice goes wrong by assuming there is one answer.
Researchers have measured how much light it actually takes to interfere, and the answer turns out to be wildly different from one person to the next. Not a little different. Enormously.
The most sensitive people were losing sleep to light the rest barely noticed. All healthy adults. Some of them reacting to a room the rest of us would call dark.
Read that again with your own bedroom in mind. It means the honest answer to "is my room dark enough" is that it depends on whose eyes are in it.
It also means the sentence you've probably heard, that it is fine because your partner sleeps through it, tells you nothing at all about you.
And closing your eyes does less than you'd hope. Eyelids reduce light. They don't remove it. That is why a bright edge can still register while you are lying there with your eyes shut, wondering why you feel wired.
There is a second thing light does, and almost nobody gets told about it. It doesn't only make sleep harder to start. It changes the sleep you do get.
In shift workers specifically, brain recordings have shown less activity in the deep stages of sleep when people slept in a dimly lit room than in the dark. Those deep stages are the ones most associated with physical recovery, and daytime sleep already runs short on them before any light gets in at all.
Which is why "just get more sleep" has never worked on you. The hours were never the part that was broken.
The sound earplugs were not built for
Start with the good news: earplugs work, and that is measured, not assumed. Put people to sleep in a noisy room and their sleep comes apart. Give them earplugs and a good part of it comes back. They're not a gimmick and you weren't wrong to try them.
They're just built for a different shape of sound than the one waking you up.
Sound is a wave, and the length of the wave decides how it behaves when it meets an obstacle. Short waves are easy to stop. They reflect, they scatter, they get absorbed by soft material. Voices, dogs barking, a door closing, birds: all short-wave, all the things foam is good at.
Long waves behave almost nothing like that. They bend around obstacles instead of bouncing off them, and they pass through solid material that stops short waves outright. An engine is a long-wave machine. So is a truck idling, a bass line through a wall, a mower two streets away.
You already know this even if nobody's ever named it for you. When a car with music goes past, you don't hear the words. You hear the bass.

A wall and a foam earplug aren't the same kind of barrier. A wall is heavy and a plug is soft, and they stop sound in different ways. But they fail in the same direction, because both are better at short waves than long ones.
So the plug does to sound roughly what the wall does. It takes the top off. What is left is the low end, arriving more or less intact, and the low end is exactly what a mower is made of.
So the plugs that handle your neighbor's dog will keep handling your neighbor's dog. They're not failing. They were never the tool for an engine.
The honest part
Some of what makes daytime sleep hard isn't environmental at all. If your sleep has been badly disrupted for months, or you are falling asleep when you don't intend to, that is a conversation for a clinician, and nothing you can buy replaces it. This article is education, not medical advice.

The mower isn't going to stop. The birds are not going to stop. Your neighbor isn't going to check your schedule before he starts the engine, and he isn't being rude, he just has no idea.
